The server does have IPv6 networking now. That said, I haven't had a chance to play around with it and experiment, and so DNS and other systems aren't yet set up for it.

Right.  It would be nice to have if you can get it going.

I forgot to ask, does this mean we have IPV6 capability yet?

Right, I just got an SSH error, that would explain it.  Figured I should check before I replaced the key.

That is interesting.  I was sure I had - evidently it was working through luck rather than judgement.

Done! Switch the nameservers and it should be ready to go.

Much obliged.  I set the nameservers up some time ago actually, but kept forgetting to ask.

Hi, is there any chance projectfuturecomic.com could also be added?

Technical Support / Re: IPv6

As for IPv6... if/when softlayer (the datacenter I'm hosted with) provides it for free, I'll support it. I won't pay extra for it though, as it's useless to 99% of people right now.

Okay, thanks.  It looks like my domain host does support AAAA records, so hopefully I would be able to make it work for my domain given a v6 address for this server.

I think the the host I use for my other stuff are still sticking their fingers in their ears and going 'la la la' over IPv4 depletion at the moment, hopefully your provider won't do the same :P

Technical Support / IPv6

Out of interest, what's the plan for IPv6 support?

On another note, the main xepher.net page has:

"Notice: Undefined index: action in /home/httpd/htdocs/header.php on line 61" ...at the top.

Thanks, both for your efforts in restoring service and also for the explanation.  It made for some interesting reading.

Do you have a page with the banner/box in it that doesn't have a proper username set? That's usually what causes that.

EDIT: It's also possible someone's browser whacked out, and didn't properly run the javascript, so it requested bad images.

Here's the fragment handling the banner:

</td><td style="vertical-align: center; width: 300px;"><center>
<script type='text/javascript' src='http://xepher.net/newsbox.js.php?username=project-future&amp;shape=box'></script>
</center></td></tr></table>

EDIT:
....either way, I'm getting many, many more counter hits than 404s so whatever it is seems to be affecting a minority of browser clients.

Previously I was plagued by a number of spurious 404 errors, which had no connection to anything within any of my pages.  I eventually bodged it by creating stubs of the files it was trying to access, part of the idea being that if it crashed something I might get a better idea of what it was.

I've just checked this morning and the top two this month (currently 60 hits) are:

/-banner.jpg   60   http://www.project-future.org/
/-box.jpg      60   http://www.project-future.org/

...any ideas what they are?  I'm starting to think the rotating banner has freaked out.

Thanks guys. Sorry I'm such a luddite.

Glad it worked out.

Knowhow Trading Post / Re: Mysterious 404s
April 16, 2009, 01:39:22 PM
I have had a few people accessing the HTML documents on mine long after I switched to PHP.  These are all from unidentified external sources so I'm not really sure what to do about that, aside from setting up loads and loads of redirects.  They do finally seem to be tailing off, though, so I'm not as bothered.

The most weird 404s I have been getting were these three:

/images/trans.gif
/java/prototype.js
/java/scriptaculous.js

...I really don't know what they are.  Nothing to do with me at all as far as I can tell.  Eventually, because these things were being continually hammered hundreds of times a month, I created a 1-pixel GIF file and some empty .js files to prevent it drowning out the noise.
