I guess I'm a test case for "how long can you stand to work your dream job?"  This summer I passed 20(!!) years playing/developing military simulations (wargames).  It is certainly not as fun as it was when I started, but I can't imagine what else I'd do.  Since managers (especially the ones in uniform) come and go, we reinvent a lot of wheels. People really can't learn from their mistakes, and history might as well never have happened.  I'm getting to the point where I can just dust off an old powerpoint slide presentation for just about any circumstance.

It has spoiled me for any _real_ job.  After all, this week I am sitting in a hotel in Bavaria, having just had a wonderful schnitzel and beer in an old ratskeller.  Three more weeks of this, at company expense!

Several (well... many, many) years ago stopped in Bozeman.  College town, reminded me of a smaller version of Boulder.  First town of any size out the north gate of Yellowstone.  Watch out, though...winter is only about 5 weeks away up there, and it can mean serious snowstorms!

I spent some time working in Boise this spring.  Nice, small city, with the college and state capitol, mountains &etc.  Very much _not_ a miniature Salt Lake, as I'd expected.  Did a later  trip to Olympia, WA mid-summer.  Much more pleasant than the urban build-up of Seattle-Tacoma, but still lots of people.  Same mountains, plus the ocean.

I read a piece yesterday about a capcha-defeating operation that actually used a 4th world call center full of people; rather than software!  Just how profitable _is_ spamming forums?

Knowhow Trading Post / Re: Writing a Resume
September 09, 2008, 10:17:16 PM
I put "references on request"; then bring a copy of the best three on a typed sheet to the interview. Former employers who liked you, older relatives and family friends in similar industries; or teachers/coaches who remember you by name are good choices. If you're gonna use their name, ask them first!

Also, I've had to review more than a few resumes: one to two pages, tops. Don't get to fancy, readability and correct spelling count a lot!

Many companies have their own form (or better yet, online form, and only want a brief resume with the cover letter in the mail.

congratulations! I'll have to put  a pirate flag on my dayshift opposite's desktop in celebration (I'm in the middle of 2 weeks of working nights, and we're having a "find the best wallpaper for the linux box" contest)

My firefox is a were-redpanda! While I chug along on my home boxen, upgrading as each new release comes out, everything has been great.

My work box (a 3-year old Dell) has it's applications installed/patched remotely by our IMO shop. On last monday, FF was broke!! By wendsday, they had installed a bright, shiny new 3.0 version. Overnight, it xformed to 2.0.0.16.., then the following night was back to 3.0. This morning, it is 2.0.0.15!  Clearly affected by the moon.

Digging into the logfiles, I discover that each morning _and_ evening, the IMO folks are uninstalling and re-installed each version.

I just howled...

Writing / Re: Baby - Lon , The Manga & Novel

every sentence ends!
with an exclamation point!!
almost?

I'll say up front I don't read much manga; I tend to blast through short bursts of dialog so fast that I don't stick around to appreciate the artwork.  So far, the plot seems a predictable one, and I visualize entirely different characters whenever I see the names Aslan and Sargon.  I encourage your effort, but maybe a little more work on plot and description are needed.

Hosting Q&A / Re: Unicode Test

I returned home from three weeks in Sendai, my 4th annual partnership visit with the JSDF. My vast Japanese skills now allow me to order beer and ask for the english menu!  Fortunately, we have translators for the workday stuff. Or there is always Google (which both sides can laugh at.)  We took great pleasure passing messages from english > chinese > korean > japanese and back. Better than encryption!

I'm always amazed how much you can accomplish with pointing, bowing and smiling.  It has been explained to me that 'yes, all Japanese have to take english in high school, but few learn much, and most forget immediately after graduation.' Still, most people I spoke with were able to follow basic english, or at least agree politely :)

Google Translate _thinks_ you originally meant to say _this_, but it's usually wrong ;)

I have reason to study Japanese.

I do not know why the Japanese study. Is probably different from the Japanese. I like different things. I started college when I was in like cartoons. Tayo Sugi watching cartoons. This is where the Internet to a "beast FANG community" to find. Veterinary people in English, "Li FU-oh" says. Li always liked FU-oh. But it is strange beast I also strange. It is new and different things like that, so Japanese習たい. Japanese is good but I HOSHIIDA unserious. I was sleeping too. Japanese like to because I want to be serious. Most study last year. I have homework to you this year. This year is different. I was wrong.

I've not used it, but since everyone else is probably in a turkey-induced coma, have you seen this very informative guide?

>Is it that hills are demonic and should be avoided at all costs

That depends on whether one means the 'old' Hill Country, with its cactus-eating demon-eyed angora goats and banjo-playing road-cast-of-Deliverance locals; or the 'new' Hill Country, where if one stands still, one is likely to be covered in asphalt and 'Strip Mauled'...

Baaaaaaa!!!
