Web Design / Weird Spaces
January 31, 2010, 04:27:38 AM
Ohh web design bugs me so much sometimes!

I've noticed for a while that on some of my sites (like Millennium http://millennium.senshuu.com), once the page finishes loading, there's a weird space between the very top of the content area and the top of the web browser area, where there shouldn't be one. (This happens for most of my layouts that are designed to always touch the very top of areas.) Like, the space pops in as soon as the page finishes loading.

I'm thinking there's some kind of Javascript code I'm using that might be causing this, because it didn't always happen. Also, when you navigate to any other page on the site the space goes away and won't come back unless you're just loading up the site in a tab/browser window for the first time.

I know it's not just my PC since it happens in all browsers on any PC, so I'm wondering just what might be causing it and how to fix it. Hurrrm.

Yes!

Soon "gmail" will mean more than just "email" with a "g"!

I'm sad this kind of thing happens to email here. So inconvenient and unfair to boot. I'm mostly sad because of the lack-of-forwarding this also entails. Email forwarding is my friend. ;x;

QuoteThe delete button is a circle with a line through it

That's what I meant actually. XD The other button isn't a "stop" symbol technically, since it's a hexagon! But it resembles a stop sign in color. Oh confusingness.

Anyway, that line-through-circle button is what's totally axing my messages instead of moving them to the trash, which is totally not what I wanted to do in both cases stated in this thread. I don't think I changed any settings in webmail for it to do that or anything because I only just recently started really using it (and figuring out how to use it, even). It's actually the most confusing webmail interface I've ever used.

What you just said about Junk must also be why so much of the mail that goes to this address (most of which isn't spam) ends up as "Unsure" too... 'cause I've just been moving older messages there. D: Very enlightened now. Except for my permanently deleted mail. I'll just see if I can drag whatever I want to delete to the trash. I need to be really careful about this because my most important mail will be going to that box now, and I can't forward it to my other emails.

General Chat / Re: What are YOU doing with your life?

I have real issues with not having a steady job right now (I've been effectively jobless since graduating college, except for one job I knew was temporary when I got it), but freelancing's on the rise it seems! It just takes a few first steps!

I got an EIN number yesterday so now it's kind of like I'm all official now.

I could actually make it sound like I'm doing a lot with my life (involved with an amazing-looking print anthology to be pitched at publishers in January, dedicated to two webcomics even if they do update slowly, run a bunch of other sites, blogs, and portfolios, freelancing web design and illustration, applying to teach English in Japan which would be an amazing new life experience for me), but I'm still not making steady cash.

YET! *an optimist*

Should I really just be dragging things I want deleted (but not obliterated) to the Trash folder? Or Junk folder? I only just realized recently that I could drag messages places.

Every time I use the delete button (with the "stop" symbol, at the top) it just kills the message permanently.

Although no other mail program does that with their delete buttons unless you're already in the Trash folder...

Me, I want badly to live in Seattle. Or at least somewhere in NY for a while.

Where I live now isn't exactly a cultural dead zone, but it's not for me.

lol, Alexa is completely pointless except to 1% of people (actually, more like 0.2%). I discovered it yeaaars ago when I tried to make a Wikipedia article about my then-only webcomic (again, lol) and someone was like NOT HIGH ENOUGH ALEXA-RANKED

Also, noooo, targeted by spammers! Oh well, none of them can post anymore. >:D Take that.

SMF spammers in particular are really awful about posting porn on your forum. :[

The Russian spammers were getting me hardcore. The .ru block I set up has already helped tons. :D

And this is interesting, but the other day I was looking senshuu.com up on Alexa to see what had changed since I last looked, and suddenly it seems a whole bunch of...spammish? foreign sites are linking to it. Somehow. Some Russian, lots of Spanish, lots of forums and such. How does this happen? e_e;;

There's a WP database backup plugin. You should find it if you search those words. I use that.

I've been wanting to ask something. My SMF forum has been getting a ton of spammer signups in the past week. They may or may not be bots, and if they are then God help me (I already have the regular captcha set to strong and unregistered people can't post and all). I think they're actual spammers though, and if they are I have no idea how to stop them, either. ;A; How do I do it?!

I've been meaning to ask if you can check if there're any infected files left. I think I already took care of all of 'em, but I may have missed one.

In recent times I've found out that people in general, and some webcomics, have been hacked with a bunch of variations of this kind of attack...a lot. And the hacks I've heard of were a lot worse than replacing all the text with spammy gibberish, too. *shudder*
