Technical Support / PHP help?
June 13, 2006, 08:31:38 PM
You have to RESET THE FILE PERMISSIONS.

You do that by going to the main site (xepher.net) and singing in under the member's section, then once you're logged in you'll see a list of links to the left hand side, one of those will say like "Fix Permissions." When you click on that you'll see a button you'll need to push, and in about 5 minutes your site will be broadcasted.

As for a tempother hosting site, I would look at http://atspace.com . They offer free, AD FREE hosting; and if I remember correctly they might even have a helpful page-layout thingy.

At this point with not too much to go on, I also predict this application would be a no for right now; but keep in mind that's not a forever thing.

Like I said check that other place out, and use it to build up your comic-circle's portfolios, and then reapply at a later date.

We dont use FTP to make our sites here, it is meerly a tool we use to upload those pages to the internet. I myself use DREAMWEAVER and then clean up the HTML myself as needbe, however you can get by making them in plain Microsoft© WORD and then instead of saving the document as a doc, save it as an HTML extension.

Well, I used to be like you... but through the years and the various wounds...

as you've said, some people are just not going to like or approve of what you do, no matter what. It isnt your fault in those instances, it's just they're worldly meanie-heads. As time goes on you will find that you will no longer wish to please everyone; because doing so isnt who you are because of the fact that you're always changing to meet everyone's expectations of you.

The best advice I think I'd have for you is do your art, and be yourself, and if someone doesnt like it or you; it's their problem and they'll have to deal with it, not you.

There is a problem here Cassiopeia, and it's a breakdown of communication to you.

Xepher and Ticky have been trying to evaluate your application, and add some personality to it. No one likes a cold yes or no. You've taken the defensive on this then, and continue to think that anyone who isnt saying "gee your work is g8!" are flaming you. They are not, but it is mildly amusing to watch the little ques you've put out throughout this on clues to who you are. You have an idea, and it's your idea; and no one can stomp on them unless you let them.

Xeph took the time to write out an entire process for applicants to follow, and expected that if you wanted a site there than you would take the time to follow the guides set in place. In doing so I can assure you that it would take you 1/10th of the time than it did for Xeph to come up with the application principles.

By your own example, you've demonstrated to this community (and I stress community, this isnt simply hosting; it's a working, breathing, community.) that you would not be a well part of it. Everyone's opinions carry some weight in the decision of your acceptance or denial because we are a community. I would suggest that you look to a gallery site, or a comic hosting site and spend some time getting to know your story, and creating a base of work for you then to reapply at a later date. As has been pointed out, many attempts to create comics and have failed; we need to see yours succeed alittle before it's considered.

Hosting Q&A / Automated "Fix File Permissions"..?
June 05, 2006, 12:27:00 AM
Since I'm phase 2, I use a .php document for my index page. Now every time I update, my main page turns into a class 500 mess, and then I have to trek back to the main site to fix my file permissions. I was wondering Xeph if there's anyway you can have an option to automate this at each .php page upload? (as long as the user specifies they want it, because others can set it to their own values I'm taking it?)

Yes, that's the word!

..I was taught earlier though that cloths at walmart are not the best bargains all the time... I went to JCPenny's, and found a skirt and several shirts to go with it for under what I would pay for a cheaper imitation at Wally*World.

Well, I dont know how most of you sit in life... but I had a feeling that most are along the same lines as my family...

We're newly married, have a 9 month old daughter who is sooooo cute... (see image below) we've both been holding just sliiiggghhhtttlyyy above minimum wage jobs, and living in a middle-priced apartment on the better side of town can leave you stretched thin between the rising cost of gas, diapers, and formula.

I was delighted when I ran across a term a couple years ago; frugal.

It's the act of saving yourself money by employing little tricks such as buying store-brand macaroni, reusing those dredded AOL cds, and other little tricks that leave your pocket just alittle bit more padded throughout the month. Some people of course live by a frugal-only life, and others simply pick and choose what works best for them.

I thought others would be interrested, so link follows:

http://www.stretcher.com/index.cfm

I did follow another site when I was first looking, however it's since been swallowed up along the masses, not to be found again. I do know they had a little guide by the lines of "The Guide to Living Cheap" but a google search turned up nothing. (you'll notice many want you to pay for their guides, but all the information is already on the internt for free.)

Some tatics I employed were:

Napkins were too expensive... but wendy's napkins are free... and they have *great* salt. (or pepper)

Buying gift items when I find a good sale, plop them in a trunk at home and when a gift-giving occasion came up I could just pick something appropriate, and coupling it with a home-made gift.

I admit, I've been dead broke... to the point of I didnt have toilet-paper. Know where this is going? Sure ya do! I dont think anyone notices when you stash a couple feet of toilet paper off the Mc.D's roll... hehe.

My Favorate: Making up huuuuuggggeeee meals, and portioning the leftovers to the freezer for home-made dinners! (another entire meal with seemingly no prep!)

What's everyone's thoughts on this? I thought some might like alittle tip, but I think now my tips gotten too big! ^_^

...did I go to school with you? 0_o (Do you happen to live around Portland or Vancouver?) You look really familiar.

I think the art is cute, like Xeph said it's alittle unpolished, but it looks like you've got a fire in your belly to keep at it... granted you still need to grow, but it looks like you're far along the path of discovering your style.

Where is the sample site? Are there more comics? I've noticed a high increase of comic applications, and I rarely see any go from start to finish without folding in the mean time. I'm in no means Xepher or a head cheese, but I just dont know about this one... especially since it involves copyrighted characters of s e g a.

I think the comic is cute, but I'm not too sure about the missing elements.
