I'm horrible about getting to these in a timely manner lately. As such, the first question has to be "are you still interested?" Your artwork and webdesign are a shoe-in, however... you initially mentioned that you just wanted a portal site to tie it all together. I generally try to avoid those, as by the point somewhere is just needing that, then their content is already out there. This place is designed to help people who otherwise wouldn't be sharing their art be able to do so. Later though, you said you'd probably bring your other sites here as well. If that's the plan, then I'll likely say yes.

Alright, once again I got horribly delayed on this. If you still want in, let me know and I'll set up an account for you.

Oh, I just noticed... the username isn't valid. No spaces, all lowercase. You want "route15" instead?

Wow... that sounds like an emotional roller coaster. Congratulations and condolences.

Okay, new certificate is in place. You'll all get a warning again, both in email and/or the website when you try something using SSL... just make sure the cert is still for xepher.net and you should be okay. I gave it 5 years for validity this time, so this issue shouldn't come up again until 2014 :-)

Heh... no worries, I'm sold on Jen's art already. Just gimme a bit to get around to proving and setting up new accounts. Bug me if I forget.

Nah, it's not down. The self-signed certificate just expired is all. Just click "continue" or whatever you need to do. I'll generate a new certificate soon though, probably tomorrow when I get the chance to mess with it.

I just happened to go to Puerto Rico on my cruise. San Juan wasn't that impressive, but we took a tour to El Yunque, which is the only tropical rainforest in the national forest system. Didn't get to stay long, and it was (of course) raining, but I would've liked to spend more time there and hiked some of the trails. Check it out if you get the chance.

Well, I'd already rooted the phone with custom firmware, so I just had to install a nifty app to let you do wifi tethering... basically takes the phone's data connection and turns the phone into a wifi access point. Really cool, and maybe-not-quite-so-allowed on the actual phone terms of service, but... well, it worked. :-)

http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ is the app if you're curious. As it notes though, it may violate your contract, and you do have to have a root-enabled firmware... either a developer platform, or a custom compiled one if you have a retail handset.

Posting this from the Miami airport... I had to hack my phone a bit to get wifi through to the laptop without paying the $5/30min. they want here. What a gyp. :-) Just got back on dry land, had a great time on the cruise, and did a couple of awesome dives. Saw stingrays, lion fish, giant lobsters, all sorts of cool things. Anyway, should be back home this evening and around/online regularly again after that. Hope nothing went wrong while I was gone.

Nifty explanation there... pretty much exactly what the linux system does when storing passwords in the shadow file, but instead of a server-secret, it's the user's password. What you said about offloading stuff to the browser/client though... when you put it like this, it makes it obvious how you can forgo PHP session files/backend entirely, and eliminate that (usually) pointless disk I/O. Definitely have to keep that in mind if/when I ever do a large project.

As in cases like this before, I'm going to entrust my friend Will (willsan) with root access and to keep an eye on things. Hopefully shouldn't be needed though.

Technical Support / Re: AWStats Permissions Error

I think you might've tried it right when it was updating the stats. It does it once a day, and the file will be unreadable until it's finished. It should correct the permissions once it completes though, and http://millennium.xepher.net/awstats/awstats.pl works just fine at the moment.

Announcements / Vacation!

I'm going on vacation next week, starting Saturday the 9th and coming back the following Saturday. I likely won't have net access for most/all of that time, as I'll be on a cruise in the Carribean. This shouldn't affect anything, as the new server seems rock solid, though applications are going to be delayed further, since I won't have time to get to any of them before I leave. If you have any last minute requests for support or things you need done, get them in within the next day or so. Otherwise, I'll see you all when I get back.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the recent spammers here have been human... or at least part-human. :-) I'm thinking of maybe making default new users have no post access, and then they can PM me if/when they want to post. I think one more hoop would make it enough so that they don't bother. Either that, or I may write something clever which requires a few multi-choice answers... something that's easy enough to find via google, but wouldn't be obvious to most people. E.g. the speed of light in furlongs per fortnight, the genus to which Megaloceros belongs, etc.

Heheh... yeah, that sounds like a fun one to write actually. Especially since http://www.google.com/#q=c+in+furlongs+per+fortnight works so well. :-)
