Title: Xepher's Moving
Post by: Xepher on May 24, 2006, 03:39:15 AM
I'm moving back to College Station Texas. I'm leaving Thursday (5/25) morning and it may be several days before I get back online. That is all.

Hotel, 11pm, Amarillo. Halfway there. To quote a song...

In CS, kinda moved in. Waiting to finish painting before I can really unpack and move into the room. Thus, I'm still on laptop for a bit.

No sense in letting a good topic go to waste. I am once again moving. Not as far this time, but I don't have my own placed lined up at the other end yet, so I'm gonna be on floors with my parents and friends for a bit. Should have internet most of the time, but I may be rather busy with a job and finding a place, so I may not have as much time as I'd like online. Apologies in advance if this causes problems, but I will try my best to make sure no one notices I'm gone.

Okay, I'm in my new place, and finally got internet today. I'm still unpacking, and job here (building contractor) has already pretty much started, so I'm quite swamped in the real world at the moment. I'll try and stay on top of things here though, at least as much as possible.

Glad you made it safe! Have fun unpacking half your stuff and realize you didn't need half of it and then just leave them in the boxes until the next time you move.

.... what? noone else does that?

Man, I never thought this topic would get so much use.

Anyway, I'm in my new apartment as of yesterday. Still unpacking and sorting out details. Turns out the new place has no built-in light fixtures, and I own no lamps. As such, everything is done by monitor glow and one 300w halogen work light. Tomorrow I'm going to the home depot and buying 1000 watts of track lighting. After that, I'll work on the new server some more.

Are you in a newer apartment?  Wow, you've moved a lot!  Are you still in Texas at least?

Xepher I'll be heading to College Station for college in a few months. What a coincidence. ;P Like asked before, are you still there? Would be interesting to live in the same city as my webhost.

This is Silentfyre by the way. I totally forgot my forum password. >_>

No... I didn't stay in CS too long this time 'round. It just wasn't working out job-wise, so I've moved to Boerne (near San Antonio) where my folks live. I'm working with my father, building homes right now, but that's not working out quite as well as I'd hoped either. I've got a lease on my current apartment through February of '08 though. I have NO idea what I'll be doing or where I'll be after that though. (Words like "Alaska" and "Australia" keep popping into my head though.) If you're ever in SA or anything before then though, I'm always happy to meet with people. FYI, that goes for anyone that swings by this part of Texas.

Alaska was cool and all, but there's nothing to do there!!

There's nothing to do here either! :-P

In all seriousness though, I don't know what people "do" anymore anyway. Either you've got friends and you find stuff to do (be it hiking, gaming, just talking, whatever), or you don't. Short of that, I've never found anything to directly "do" save going to see movies, shows, or other obvious/direct entertainment stuff. I don't think I'd move to Alaska without checking it out for a couple weeks first though. Would be surprising if it was worse than here though.

I feel awful for not keeping up and responding to your post. I actually LIVE in San Antonio at the moment (born and raised except for my brief relocation to Colorado Springs.) College was put off for half a year in order to collect some money from a job. I *should* be heading to CS in January if all goes well. I am really itching to get out of here and live somewhere new.

There really isn't much to do here, I am afraid. I have a few friends that will call me out to see a movie or generally hang around and attempt to not spend money. There are things like bowling, skating and whatnot, but nothing really exciting. I do enjoy the rodeo seeing as I volunteer there every year now. Unfortunately, the rodeo is only really here for a little while and it goes by really fast.

Maybe we could meet sometime, though I'm not entirely sure what that would entail. I think I am quite a few years younger than you, and as I've said, there isn't really much to do around here.

Wow, this is the day of ancient threads!

As to what you said though, yeah... I'm still in the same boat. Been here for a year as of next week, and I haven't met a single new person even close to my age. I meet old people that are friends with my parents, or really young kids my cousins know. I keep thinking about moving to alaska just for the change/shock value.

When you say heading to CS... do you mean Colorado Springs or College Station? I'm guessing the former, but my mind is so ingrained after 4+ years in college station that "CS" will always be that.

As for meeting up... yeah we could do that if you want. Maybe grab some coffee (or whatever it is cool people do.) Heck, I don't even know a good coffee place in this town, it's just that always sounds like the easiest option. But, by all means, if you have a better idea, I'm really up for whatever seems the least awkward. :-) Poke at me on AIM sometime (Xepher42) if you feel like it.

Hehe. I meant College Station since you abbreviated it your post as such.

I met a few people at the beginning of last year, and somehow they still stick to me. The only new people I've met on my own are older and come in and drop their clothes off at where I work. No real new friend contacts, but these people are at least nice. I always kept moving around thanks to my mom, so I had resigned myself to not making too many friends that I would miss when I moved on. Somehow that is biting me in the rear, but at the same time its nice to have at least a few close ones.

Alaska always sounded interesting to me. Just the whole light/no light thing would keep things exciting for a while. Plus I sort of miss the snow. I know I'd get loads there but, meh.

I don't drink coffee, but I'll drink just about anything else so YOU can drink coffee and I'll drink Hot Chocolate or something and look important. :P

Yeah, I REALLY miss the mountains and the snow! I'm hoping to pull off a ski trip in January or February though, so that will help some, but I fear a move is inevitable. Alaska just seems like the farthest place I can run to and still be in the U.S. And what I think I'm really wanting to do is just shake things up. I'd move to canada or australia, but the paperwork is a nightmare, and they generally want you to have a job lined up BEFORE they let you in. I keep a really bizarre sleep/wake schedule already, so the long-long nights in alaska wouldn't bother me I don't think. Part of me thinks that I might somehow find more opportunity there because of that... if you're willing to go somewhere or do something other people aren't, you can usually get ahead. Not that I have any idea WHAT I would actually do... :-)

I think you'll like college station. You can't ask for a better town when you're starting off in life. It's big enough to have all the amenities, but because it's so full of college students, you're always meeting people that are in the same boat as you, so to speak, so it's easy to make friends or find things to do that appeal to you.

If you don't like coffee, and I don't really... yeah, something else then. Grab a bite to eat maybe, fast or semi-fast food somewhere. That's my modus operandi when I go into San Antonio: Eat someplace we don't have in Boerne. Lemme know if that works, and if there's any time/day of the week that's better for you. My "schedule" is pretty non-existent at the moment, so I'm flexible. Lemme know.

On a side note, I think the server upgrade broke your site. The php open tags need to be changed from "<?" to "<?php" to fix it.

Yes it did. I'm currently fighting SSH Secure Shell to even connect at the moment. I got everything set up from Databits' tutorial and was trying to enter the password, but it wouldn't take. To make sure I had the right one I logged in through the site and it worked fine. Now it wont even connect from the program. Blargh. I have an ortho appointment anyways.

I visited College station a few weekends ago to go to the game and see the town. I really did enjoy the atmosphere. Small towns just give me that homely feeling that San Antonio doesn't offer. Everyone is friendly, and if you're wearing Maroon you ARE the cool club. Wish I had that in High School. :P

I'll have to get with you on AIM sometime later so we can set something up. My schedule is pretty darn free after mid-next week. There are a lot of nice restaurants here though, like Alamo Cafe etc. :) I haven't been there in a while. Then again I think some people  know from high School work there. Its strange to go in there with my mom if its often. Makes it look like we live without cooking for ourselves.

Did you make sure to make the host name www.xepher.net as opposed to just xepher.net?

Yeah, keep in mind my tutorial is a little dated and I haven't exactly tested it recently. I suppose I should come up with a new one for WinSCP which is what I'd recommend using at this point.

Databits, I can make one for Cyberduck, if you'd like.  I've tried that one and Fugu, I believe it was, and I much prefer Cyberduck.
