Title: I need some advice/suggestions for a online magazine I'm considering
Post by: Gwyn on April 25, 2007, 10:35:20 PM
Namely the name. This magazine will have no defined topic or path, I just want random stuff to publish as a pdf for people to download every month. I'm also probably going to be looking for contributors. Right now I just I need a name that I could use as a domain name .com or .net is cool.

Suggestions?

PS It can't be too too vulgar.

These are some names I got from co-operative brain storming, yay! I'm looking for some sort of satire on generic publication names since I do not intend for this to be a serious publication at all. (it's intended to be a monthly or bi-monthly thing)

The Daily Annual
The Daily Quarterly - our year in review
The Annual Daily
The Annual Quarterly

The Annual Quarterly, a magazine of varying coherence. And you get taq-mag.com for the url too! That's my vote.

Also, if anyone else is like me, and missed a key part above...

She's looking for contributors!

:-)

I'm having a hard enough time trying to think of a business name that has an available domain myself, afraid my creativity drive for this is not working at the moment.

Yeah I think I'm going to go with The Annual Quarterly.

On to the next issue of this meeting. Would anyone consider contributing? anything, I don't care, photography, stories, rants, comics. I just want to compile some half way intelligent and/or funny things into a monthly publication. No theme you can do whatever about ANYTHING as long as it's not to vulgar just follow the xepher.net guidelines for that stuff and I'm cool. I have one idea for a continuous comic series that would be contained in this, but for me to try to come up with everything else every month for this would be...well...I wouldn't do it.

You'd get full credit as a contributor and I'd have a section on the web page for all past, present and guest contributors. I'm not here to steal anyones work I just want to make a free magazine about random crap.

Once I get an idea how how many people would like to do what, I can start laying out a rough draft and determine around how many pages I'll need.

I could probably rant about a few things in the AQ once school's out (5 weeks to go means it's spine-crushing assignments time!), but I'm not sure I can do half-way intelligent with it. Or funny. I can do physical comedy, but writing funny is harder than looking funny :

Good luck though!

yeah I have another 6 weeks of college left :p

It is intended to only be monthly or bi-monthly so no real rush on anything.

I'd like to write something... no idea what yet. I'm leaning toward a column sort of thing, as my skills at persuasive writing need some exercise. That, and I've had a lot of opinions building up and no place to vent them. It won't be really political or current events sort of stuff though, rather more sciencey and, I hope, I-really-never-thought-of-that..y.

Well I just happen to half-way intelligent and occasionally claim to be a quarter-way funny and I'm always interested in an excuse to improve my writing.  It might be helpful to know a few things:

* What type of audience are you aiming for? (e.g., which of the following is the best response for "What's up?", A) "Nothing much, you?", B) "The Sky", C) "Away from the center of the Earth", D) "Opposite the gravitational force vector." or would the average reader look up a word like 'pedantic' or just read past it?).
* Are there any topics that you specifically want covered, any that you'd prefer to stay away from?
* How much text do you want?

Give me a moment to come up with a few ideas on what I can pull off.

I may contribute something...likely artwork of some sort.  I'm not gonna' guarantee anything 'til I have more free time.  (Read:  when school's out)

To answer Omega

D

Nothing to avoid other than blatant pornography and violence. If you want something controversial than sure thing!

Text is something I have to decide on when I get an idea of how many people want to do things for it. I mean I'm going to give my friend a couple pages just for her artwork. I'm taking a few pages for a comic.

For now I'd say as much or as little as you want. A few paragraphs to a 5 page essay I guess. I'm not planning to actually print these, so there are no cost issues. As long as it doesn't go to long winded to bore people I'll take it. The number of pages if of no importance to me.

I can think of two ideas that could mesh well (so that one can be filler for the other).  I have a few bits of interesting knowledge laying around that could be turned into "why xyz is perfectly normal" (or as my economics prof put it, you can look at the news and say "he's full of s***").  I think that could go well mixed with "why both sides of the issue are off the deep end" pieces.

Alternately, there's the normal intro-to-comp style essays or the rambly columns I've done before.

Yep I got it, my question is, would you like an actual section (this is for everyone)? This doesn't out pressure on you to create new stuff every issue, if you have a bad month and can't put anything in I'll just leave it out.

Anyway what I mean by section is that if you're a regular contributor I could just give your series of essays, rants, comics, etc a name Like "Cha0s's Theories" "GET OFF MY LAWN! Stories by a senior citizen.".

If it's just a one or few time thing I'd just throw the title up there with "by:whoever" and a link.

Psh...as long as you don't require anything...why not?

I'll try to find something seemingly interesting to start scribbling out.

If you think of anything, I'm willing to try.
