Title: Wonderful Style-Switching!
Post by: Miluette on October 05, 2008, 01:25:06 AM
So, I recently figured out how to make different layouts for the same website using only CSS (and a tad of Javascript). It is lovely. I have made three layouts for my Lovefeast website, seen here:

http://lf.senshuu.com/index2.php

Three image links in the sidebar change the layout just like that, and soon I'll be adding one more! Why haven't more people done this?? (Or maybe they have and I just haven't seen... but seriously, I wanna see it more on the kinds of sites I browse!)

While I'm still tweaking and improving things with all the layouts and doing some things tableless has been an absolute pain in the fanny, I'm really liking that I'm able to do this. Of course, sooner or later I'll figure out how to better do some of the things I'm doing in CSS, but for now I'm happy. <3

For the record, this is the tutorial I used: http://www.alistapart.com/stories/alternate/ This website is pretty great.

Little gamers did that for a while. I think they ditched it because it was a pain to maintain three layouts. From my own perspective, I make a site to look how I think it's best. It's not for the user to switch around. :-)

I bet that's what most people think. But that's for a certain kind of website!
With something artsy like a single webcomic, you can do something like this and get away with it. Of course, I like some layouts more than others, but that's my own preference... I wanna see if others have different prefs and ultimately root out or improve the weaker layouts, hee.

I'd never do something like this for my art site or portfolio. The best I can do with those is make  them semi-interactive.

Actually this sort of thing can be really handy under the surface for getting around browser specific issues *coughIEcough* or making platform specific layouts (for iPhone and the like)...

Oooo...I wonder how my sites would look on iPhones. A long time ago I looked at one of them on an iPhone and, well, it was messed up, lol. That was before I really cleaned things up code-wise, though.

If you design your CSS and page layout correctly, you shouldn't need alternate versions for different browsers.

Yes, it was to my surprise that my layouts and javascript don't seem to whack out across browsers! (Besides the whacked-out parts that I have yet to figure out myself.) That's one less thing for me to worry about.

I'm glad doing something for art's sake wasn't limited by technology, for once. <3
