Yeah, I'd seen the original back in the day. Nvidia (or was it ATI) took the pipe-dream one and made it into a real-time demo for their graphics cards a few years ago too. Cool stuff, and makes me think I should get back into 3D animation again.
I think it was ATI, or at least there was a pipe dream screensaver on the download page for ATI cards.
