I'm trying to get google apps set up for my site.  The domain is registered at godaddy and the nameservers point to xepher.  Now, the problem is that by doing so, I lose any ability to go into what they call "total dns" and change things like cname? and mx records.

Google has an automatic set up for this, which worked, but I have to change the nameservers to the godaddy hosted ones or parked domain in order to see the "total dns" area.  In doing so, this messes up the domain-site relationship and causes a "does not exist" error.

Has anyone else had experience in setting up a google apps account?  Especially with godaddy?  Not quite sure on the whole nameservers thing.

Hosting Q&A / Delete banners?
March 25, 2008, 01:47:10 AM
Hey, Xepher, I was just wondering if it would be possible to add a "Delete banners" button/link to the banner management page.  (I'm still participating in the banner exchange!)  Mine are old and I haven't had the time to make new ones yet.  Would this be possible or would it throw off the banner system?

Knowhow Trading Post / hard drive failure
January 02, 2008, 09:25:43 PM
Mostly to rant, but is it fairly common for hard drives to die with no prolonged agonizing click-click?  Cause mine just did without any symptoms of a dying hard drive.  :(  No power surge, no abuse, no viruses, no magnets, no sledgehammer and boom.

Knowhow Trading Post / Xepher.net donation buttons
December 16, 2007, 02:13:43 PM
A while ago, I said that I'd add a Xepher.net donation button to my site.  And then a bunch of stuff happened and I forgot. x.x

So here it is finally.  If anyone wants to use this, please feel free to add it to your site as a way of shuffling $$ to Xepher.  Or if you feel like posting other un-themed donation buttons for other members to use, that would be awesome.  Cause I'm not really an artist and the most I can do is move text around and cut'n'paste.

EDIT: As Xepher pointed out, it is best to link to http://xepher.net/donate.php - the donation page. ^_^

General Chat / Boobies!

I have nothing better to do, I suppose, than putter around looking for stuff.  But I saw this site, Pink for October (http://pinkforoctober.org/), and thought you guys might be interested in joining.  I like the idea and, well, the cause is a good one.

Web Design / subdomain vs. domain
June 08, 2007, 08:26:19 AM
Maybe someone who knows how search engines work can help me out here.  I switched my domain names in February/March.  Not surprisingly, traffic has dropped (but it's slowly rebounding!).  However, search engines still favor the xepher.net subdomain over my real domain, sometimes by a page or so of returned search results.  Any idea how I can fix this?  Or is it just a matter of time?

Web Design / drop down menus
May 17, 2007, 01:46:49 AM
How do you feel about drop down menus?  Not the form option ones, but the DHTML/CSS ones, like this, but without the submenus.

I'm thinking of switching over because then everything on my site would be 2 clicks away, instead of 3 clicks....

I want to add a section of downloads to my site (all legal!), but I don't want to use up Xepher.net resources to do so.  The files will be comparatively large (0.5-3MB each) and I'm anticipating on there being a lot of them.  I know of Yousendit, RapidShare, and Megaupload, but those three sites only let you have files up for 7-30 days.  I'm looking for something a little more permanent.

Does anyone have a file hosting service that they'd recommend?  I've never really had to store anything before, so I have no idea about what's good and what's bad.

Knowhow Trading Post / prevent hotlinking
February 17, 2007, 07:50:47 AM
I'd like to set up something, just in case, to prevent people from leeching bandwidth.  I followed various tutorials about setting up an htaccess file to do this, but whatever I try, it just kills my site and doesn't protect the images.  I was wondering if any one else could point me in the right direction... :D

General Chat / Who likes word games?

A friend of mine just gave me this site: http://shygypsy.com/farm/p.cgi

I guess I'll know what I'll be doing on those month-long "holidays" when the Board of Education still makes me come in to work, even though all the kids are at home and there are no classes to be taught.  x.x

General Chat / need some computer advice
June 15, 2006, 04:26:35 PM
It turns out that the hard drive on my current laptop is dying, as it is eternally slow and clicks like it's speaking a foreign language.  I can't say I'm surprised, but it is kind of sad.  However, I have two options, which I need to discuss with my parents.  I can either replace the hard drive in this computer, or buy a new computer.  Economically, the answer is obvious, but this laptop also does not have USB 2.0, no wireless card, a small amount of RAM, and weighs 9 pounds total.  It's never been very portable and I keep getting error messages with some USB devices.

I'm leaning towards buying a new computer, especially after my parents hinted that they'd foot the bill.  The 3 pound ones are around 2k, but I figure that after this guy, a 4-5 pound laptop around 1k will seem like a perfect vacation.  Additionally, it would be up to date and hopefully last me through this 2 year job stint and grad school.  The decision falls down to whether to buy another PC, or get a Mac.

Right now, I'm leaning towards a Mac, because based on price and features, it seems to be the best deal.  Is it?  Or is it just a marketing lie by Apple?

General Chat / sell things online?
May 22, 2006, 07:48:03 PM
I've just graduated and am confronted with the monumental task of trying to cram two segments of my life together into one room.  I have also failed, because my room's too small and I just have too much stuff.

I've decided to donate my good condition old clothes and clothes I hate and never have worn to the local places in town.  However, I want to sell my old books, CDs, and DVDs because the bookstores in town only do in-store credit and they're locally owned with little variety of titles.

I've bought things from eBay and Half.com, but I've never sold things in any service like that.  Has anyone ever used those kinds of services to sell things before?  Any pros and cons that you've noticed from the seller's side?

Web Design / i've broken my site...again
January 31, 2006, 05:19:45 PM
Hey, guys, I did a really stupid thing.  I was going to fix a bunch of typos in a table and thought that I could fix them in excel, then upload them into the table.  I fixed the typos, but I can't seem to get the file uploaded.  I thought I was being good...I saved each table as a csv (not for excel) file, with all the "" and ; so forth.  Whenever I try to do the import feature, it doesn't seem to work. :(  Can anyone help me?

EDIT:  I've been messing around with it for most of the afternoon...so far, my best luck has been:

EDIT:SQL code removed by admin... was screwing up sql in forum upgrade.

The 3 rows that get put in are blank.  Other variations include only one row with partial information, or no rows are put in, even though it says that the upload has been a success.

Technical Support / i think i locked myself out
October 22, 2005, 02:42:00 AM
Hey, Xepher, I think I locked myself out this weekend.  I have no way of FTP'ing except through IE and now, every time I type in ftp.xepher.net, it freezes. :(  I had a small crisis of divs this weekend and I kept uploading things to see if I had fixed the problem.

Web Design / stats tracking?
July 28, 2005, 04:22:22 PM
I was wondering what you guys used for stats tracking, if anything at all.  I know that Xepher has provided us with one, but I sometimes forget to grab the monthly stats at the end of the month.  By the time I remember (usually a couple days afterwards), it has been reset.  So I was wondering if you all had some kind of external service you used and that you would recommend. :)
