Technical Support / Re: Internal server errors
July 18, 2007, 07:24:29 AM
I've already sent this in email because the forum wasn't working, but:

I know what the big database table is, probably. It's most likely to be the WillowCMS logfiles. We've had to take a large chunk of them out of the active database into an archived version before, and since then, they've only been growing faster. I've asked Mithandir to do this again, and will specify that he should remove more than he did the last time  If you want, I can also request that he keeps fewer logs. While we're both big nerds about being able to drill down into our logs, I'm more than willing to give that up if it means better service to the readers.

However, to be able to do those things, he needs to be able to get into the CMS, which is affected by the maintenance status, and the shell, which doesn't seem to be working (I've tried with both my new and my old password). Does the maintenance status include the shell?

The status on my mt-tb and mt-blahblah scripts is that they're disabled from within Movable Type, so no comments can get posted right now. The spam protection within the latest Movable Type seemed adequate at first but didn't hold up for long, so I went moderated after three months and switched comments off entirely again after four. Presumably the script still runs when a spammer tries to hit it, only it rejects everything. Since this situation doesn't cause Movable Type to do the file rebuilds of doom, server overhead should be slight, except in case of a severe bot attack. Or so I thought.

Unfortunately, if I remember correctly, these scripts are also needed to allow users to read existing comments and trackbacks, so I can't get rid of mt-blahblah entirely... well, not without a whole lot of other work. Mt-tb can be safely lost as my weblog never got many trackbacks.

I'm a bit puzzled by the bot hits to my front page. I don't see them in my CMS's logs, at least not in those numbers. I got a large number of bot hits on Sunday and early on Monday (early being before 10 AM, CET, when I left home after Mithandir had upgraded the anti-spam system). After that, everything seemed normal.

Technical Support / Internal server errors

Is anyone else getting lots of 500 (Internal Server Error) responses lately? I am, and it's affecting both my Perl-based Movable Type installation as my PHP/MySQL-based CMS for the comic.

At first, we (Mithandir who wrote the CMS and I) blamed a persistent spam attack on the comic, but that seems to have died down.

General Chat / Re: Movies...

I've been meaning to watch this one. I like Besson's early work, like Quest for Fire, I like animated fantasy, and I like David Bowie as an evil wizard. I'll look for it in the stores.

Besson wrote this as a series of children's novels before making the movie, though he did intend to make the movie from the start. It's one of his pet projects, you could say.

Somehow, I can't help feeling that that's a retrograde step. Don't quite know why, though.

Yeah, I heard that from a cartoonist at the small press minicon I went to today. They can't handle any more.
They could communicate that better, though.

I could do the other half... but only if no condition that things be furry is introduced, because I obviously  wouldn't qualify for that myself.

And the pie fight. That came from left field, for me at least. Also, the black and white Red-Shirted Ensign with the bullseye on his shirt.

You too, eh? I hear that a lot. The invite system seems to be broken.

Get yourself on the major listing sites. At the very least, that means The Belfry, Onlinecomics.net and The Webcomic List, though there are many others including some that others will argue are more essential.
Get on a topsitelist. Get on two or three. I don't like them much but they may work for you.
Blog about your comic on Comixpedia. Blog about your comic on Livejournal. Post your comic on relevant Livejournal communities.
Take part in comics communities. Only participate in those where you feel genuinely at home, but do participate in them.
Take part in communities for the interests that show up in your comic.
Take part in a crossover. Do fan art.
And always wear sunscreen. The benefits of sunscreen have been proved by science.

Oh, great. Another new password to forget repeatedly. How many dictionaries did that cryptographic strength checker test again?

(and then after all that effort, it emails me the password in clear text. Ah well. That at least gives me something to save in my Gmail archive, the password to which I won't be spreading around because I don't remember it.)

It's not working for me either. Nothing in my spam box, nothing in my inbox.

Yep. I suggested to Jelena that she could have other time/space traveling characters in the Vortex as well.
