I remember it being brought up, but I totally forgot what happened.

Wordpress can allow people to sign-up for an account on say, Ardra or PSI. To do so, it sends e-mail verification on sign-up... also, for lost passwords... As I recall, you have the servers *not* do any automatic e-mailing.

Though I thought there was a work around for that, especially if the e-mail was not through Xepher....

Can you refresh my memory on the whole matter?

A handy guide I hope to expand to show multiple comic styles in various image extension and saving options.

I utilize IrfanView because it is the awesome-est image saver for quality and size. I get better results than saving from Photoshop. I usually open my original files and PSDs in IrfanView and resize and save that way.

I've been using IrfanView for over 10 years.

Trading Card Game Based On Webcomics

The WAGON Webcomic Battle is a trading card game that revolves around many different webcomic characters and plot devices. At present, there are 11 different webcomics that have contributed to the game's cards. Plus the Jenny Everywhere winners of the "Draw" to Win Contest posted on The Webcomic Beacon a few weeks back.

The preliminary deck, Deck Zero, includes characters from Chooken, Prepare to Die, Roomies, Sarah Zero, Stridsparters, and War of Winds; had been out for several weeks.

The game's official launch decks, Alpha and Beta, are currently available for presale and will ship in October. Webcomics in these decks include NSTA, Ardra, P.S.I., The Best of What's Left, Unamused Comics, and the 2nd and 3rd place Jenny Everywhere contest winners.

People who pre-order BOTH the Alpha and Beta decks, will get a bonus card, The Kitten of Chaos!

In addition to this news, The Jenny Everywhere Shifter Archive, will be having a drawing to give away FIVE (5) of the promotional, Ultra Rare Jenny Everywhere card. The card, drawn by Benj Christensen, will never be available in any deck, nor any booster pack. FIVE (5) people can win it, and you don't even need to order any deck.

To enter the drawing, Just send an e-mail to TheShifterArchive@gmail.com with "WAGON DRAWING" in the subject. Include only your first name and mailing city within the e-mail.

(Your e-mail will only be used only for this drawing, no hidden mailing list signup.) Winners, chosen at complete random, will be mailed the rare card when the Alpha and Beta decks are mailed.

Xepher, I think you told me about it before, but I don't remember.

I have a couple hundred pages I'd like to change just little things in. They have the same coding asside from specific images (comics) and the navigation links.

Not sure where to properly post this... or how to find such comics... but we've been trying to find webcomics that are "stalled" for whatever reason. People not sure how to progress their comic, but just don't know what to do.

The Webcomic Beacon tries to find people that are stuck, but want to continue. We want to try to do 20 minute Brainstorm Sessions with those interested. For fun and for motivation.

I'm posting here to ask if anyone here, or if anyone knows of someone that may be interested. Of course, we aren't professionals in the least, but sometimes all one needs is to brainstorm and a push.

I should really learn some CSS coding for my web pages... I kinda got shunned a couple episodes ago on The Webcomic Beacon for all the tables I use... also for not using "strong" tags instead of the "b" bold tags... I also use Frontpage Express....

Can anyone recommend a new webpage creation program that doesn't feel intimidating? Oh, and also could simulate PHP and CSS server script running? ... or however that stufff works so you can work on it without being online, and uploading and checking on your site if it looks right?

I tried using DreamWeaver before... I got so lost in it. I like the simplicity of Frontpage.... Though I'm sure my code is redundant, bulky, and looks like crap.

Also, I think there are CSS code sites out there... I think I was told a couple of them a while ago, but I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations.

Technical Support / Moving the database
June 23, 2008, 07:27:57 PM
I need to get a copy of the database to move the wordpress information regarding The Webcomic Beacon over to another server. If this something I can do myself? If so, I have no freaking idea how to do it :/

Sometime this summer I wanna showcase Xepher.net on The Webcomic Beacon Podcast... primarily for webcomics that are somewhat-updating. We can also shamelessly pimp other Xepher site's too. I'll probably tie in a theme of "Promoting Yourself" with it to, and make the who show a bit comedic with "Shameless Promotion", which tends to be entertaining.

Sometime this summer... June/July maybe... maybe July More likely.

If there is anyone from the Xepher Community interested, post here. There are some I might contact via e-mail because i don't think they check the forums that much :P

I figured I'd ask here. Desh gave me some info on a simple "accept and continue" dialog box:

For a pop up, it's pretty simple depending on how far you want to go.

You could have a javascript onclick with a return confirm in the links.
<a href="#UrlGoesHere" onclick="return confirm('This content is rated mature. You must be at least 18 years old to continue.');">Mature Content</a>

Of course it won't work if the user's browser doesn't have javascript.  If you're really concerned about that, you could write some little php script that reads the URL in a get query.  That page could ask the user the same question without depending on javascript.

<a href="mature.php?url=UrlGoesHere">Mature Content</a>

In mature.php
This content is rated mature. You must be at least 18 years old to continue.
<a href="<?php echo $_GET['url']; ?>">Continue</a>

I was curious if there was a way to password protect certain pages. Merely enter a password to continue. no user name or anything. Just a password.

Hosting Q&A / Sexual Content
April 30, 2008, 11:29:20 PM
Alrighty, Seems that someone found a "Tiajuana Bible" aka an "Eight Pager" aka a small booklet of a cartoon porn story, of Jenny Everywhere. I have yet to see it, but it still begs the question of if I can have it on the site.

Presently there are a few Jenny Everywhere strips that have been marked as "mature", however, this may be even MORE mature. As far as the site is concerned, I was curious if this might be a problem.

Of course, you may need to see it before making a decision, so I'll let you know when this person finds and sends it to me.

My original plan in this situation would be to include it on the site and put "Mature" next to the link. My back-up plan is to censor certain portions and allow people to e-mail me for an uncensored version.

And actually... is there a script or something where I could have a pop-up window asking for a birthday, or a simple "Are you over 18?" "Yes" "Cancel" dialog box?

Hosting Q&A / Wikis
March 17, 2008, 08:21:47 PM
Is it possible to run a Wikiserver on a Xepher account?

I mean, understandably if only with preassigned logins being able to have access to making edits.

Hosting Q&A / Xepher NewsBox content rules?
December 19, 2007, 08:08:02 AM
I just noticed yny-u has a nude on her ad... I was wondering if this should be something that me push a bit too much for other sites that may have younger audiences?

I mean, it's art yes, but for, say, Ardra, a comic at a PG rating and recently got link on FamilyWebcomics.com (WC-10)... might we set a sorta rating just for the ads?

Or am I out of line? It just kinda popped in my head...

I'm tired, I mighta jumped the gun.

I've been getting a small percentage saying they can;t download the whole MP3 to The Webcomic Beacon.... same thing if they try playing it in the pop up player.... Does anyone have and ideas as to what it may be?

The first show was nearly 60 minutes (stopping at betweeen ~15-30 minutes), the 2nd show was 30 minutes.... at least one person mentioned only getting to 26 minutes with the 2nd one....

Technical Support / How to upload to your Xepher Account
December 11, 2007, 09:20:36 AM
(I figured making a general topic on uploading would be a lot more helpful.. particularly for newcomers)

Here is my personal How-To guide for webcomickers anyway:

Also, this is filled with my personal opinion as well. I'm not an authority.

QuoteYou need to download WinSCP

http://winscp.net/eng/download.php

Get the 4.0.5 (or latest) Installation Package. Once you load it up, click on the "New" button:

Host name: www.xepher.net
Port Number: [leave this alone]
User Name: username
Password: [self explanitory]
Private Key File: [leave this alone]
Protocol: SCP

Then click the "Save..." button and save it as:
username@xepher.net

Once you have that, Login.

One you are in, it will look like how Windows does. with icons of folders (directories) and files.

Now, the first screen that pops up, you can ignore basically everything on there. Just open public_html.

This is your main directory. if you put an index page in this folder, THAT is your home page. Inside this folder is your ROOT directory... it is where http://username.xepher.net will take people.

From "public_html", you can create more directories. such as "BASE". I have a "BASE" directory on all my projects. it is essentially where I put ALL of the images that go into the page design and are not needed by anything else... such as a title logo, Project Wonderful Ad images, menu and button images. It keeps them nice and tidy. Also, this "BASE" directory would show up as "http://username.xepher.net/BASE/".

Attached is an image I use FREQUENTLY. It is "Invisable.gif" It is basically what I just said... an invisable, or transparent GIF image. I used this for spacing things out. Instead of using a bunch of "< br>" and "< p>" breaks, I can adjust the size and space that this image takes up in order to position things where I want them. Also, unlike breaks, it will not resize depending on people's font size selection. You might find it useful.

Directories I suggest you create (of course you can make your own, and do what you want, but these are ideas):

BASE (already discussed)
COMICS or STRIPS (for your strips)
BONUS or ART (for extra arts or bonus material)
STORAGE (for non-specific files and images)
LINKS (if you have links/ad images to store)

Also, you might want to make an ARCHIVE directory as well for your individual strip pages as well (if you have them). Alternate methods would be just to put them in your ROOT directory (public_html), or even in your STRIPS or COMICS directory.

But these are just ideas.
