General Chat / Re: Reasons I have a job

I may not understand much of that tech-coder-geeky stuff, I do know stupidity when I see it.

Also, that DoNothing thing was hilarious XD That had me giggling for three minutes straight.

General Chat / Re: back to school

I'm lucky enough that my college's classes don't start until september 4th (because there's a crapload of things I'm doing right now :\). Of course I've sort of entered the "prepping for school" period now, which is almost as bad in a way...

The future: giving new meaning to the "blue screen of death."

If you're wondering why her suit isn't shaded, well.....the prospects of "horror movie marathon" were promising. Err, I mean, it's a style choice representing the, uh, emptiness of the future. Or something.

I tried a new style of drawing where I don't actually draw, I just slap on the base colors then draw on those. Sort of like Samurai Jack in a way (god I miss that show).

time:
10 seconds for idea
5 minutes to sketch
47 minutes painting
7 minutes uploading and blabbing.
total: 59.1 minutes.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a monster movie.

EIDT: oh yeah, also......BOO! I'M BACK!

General Chat / Re: This is what I call news!
June 27, 2007, 08:39:57 PM
I couldn't even watch it in firefox. Even though I swear I have the latest version it keeps telling me "oh you need Firefox 1.blah blah blah." Finally I got it to work, and I think it was at least a little worth it. That clip was GREAT. It's good to see at least somebody realized that all that celebrity crap isn't real news. However, considering that this video was right below it on the "most watched" list, and even made it to the editor's picks, it looks like we've got a loooooong way to go before mainstream "news" is actually news.

General Chat / Amazing Color Changing Card Trick
May 12, 2007, 05:45:00 AM
(actually, that text color only works if you're using a specific forum display setting. I'm using the "radium" display and the text is the same color as always :P)

I managed to catch the girl's shirt! But yeah I was so focused on the card trick I missed everything else. And really, why is there a man in a gorilla suit there? I bet it's part of the trick.....

Talking about fire hydrants is a cure for depression. Didn't you know that?

Besides, you actually started the whole fire hydrant thing anyway ;)

I wish you and the fire hydrant the best. Maybe someday there will be little human-hydrant hybrids running around town, eh? wink wink nudge nudge... ;)

General Chat / Anyone with Allergies?
May 01, 2007, 07:01:36 AM
I own a damn cat :P but I'm allergic to a kind of tree pollen. Kind of sucks that I live in the middle of the woods, then....

The worst times I get them are the beginnings of spring and fall, and it's really bad : although it's funny as hell to scare little kids when my eyes are bright red from the irritation.

Well, it'd be nice to hear a little more about what your project actually IS, maybe a few pictures of what it looks like and things too.

Also, I'm going to assume that you won't be using the samurai champloo layout if you're given hosting here?

I could probably rant about a few things in the AQ once school's out (5 weeks to go means it's spine-crushing assignments time!), but I'm not sure I can do half-way intelligent with it. Or funny. I can do physical comedy, but writing funny is harder than looking funny :

Good luck though!

Applications / Kuro Works
March 18, 2007, 08:37:13 PM
Okie dokie, let's see how much damage I can do this time...

First off, your username cannot contain spaces or capital letters, as it will be your URL here at xepher.net. "kuroworks.xepher.net" yes, "Kuro Works" no. This is stated in the rules at least once, and many times over here in the forums as a lot of people seem to miss that. Don't quite understand how, yet.

Second, your website seems to be made with a template (Yahoo! PageBuilder, I believe) and you state that your friend is doing the HTML. Generally, team efforts are less likely to succeed than just learning enough HTML to get by yourself. It's not hard to do, honest. However, if you feel you can't learn it, then could you at least get your friend to show what they can do with it? You need at least one site that actually showcases what yours might actually look like should you get approved.

Third and foremost, with a grand total of four drawings, and not a single comic in sight, the actual art presentation, the key ingredient to getting approved, is lacking. How often would you say you have ever updated any website you've ever had? DeviantART, Gaia, anything. Do you actually have any comics done already, or are these just plans for the future? You'll have noticed, if you read the directions carefully, that Xepher's not interested in plans. Plans can easily change, after all. A well established webcomic (or series of webcomics) that you've devoted time and effort to, on the other hand, is harder to give up.

Anyway, my two cents there. Hope I haven't crushed your spirit. (not yet, anyway. It's more fun when they struggle ;))

Applications / The Dragon Comics

....*cough* http://www.comicspace.com/

I'm just saying, it's been done. A lot. In many different forms, in many different places. I don't mean to be rude when I ask, "what makes your version so special?"

Aside from that, do you have any content that is actually your own, or is this just a community site where other people post things and you just do the (not so fancy) coding? If so, I suggest you turn back now. This is first and foremost a community for individuals that occasionally consider themselves "artsy", not a network of stand-alone communities like the one you have there. Huzzah individualism!

Also, why should Xepher allow you to offer hosting for comics and artists on his server using your template, when he could just as easily give them their own spaces if he deemed the content acceptable?

It just seems....flawed. Sorry. I'm sure everyone else will love you.

http://web.archive.org/web/20030324093320/http://www.mystikskies.com/

My first website actually had a domain name, and there it is! But most of the images aren't showing up, uncluding the background image. Sadly (not really) I lost the images I used for the links, but oh well. It was a tree just so you know.

All I can say is...ye gods I was hyper back then. Just how much soda was I injesting when I was 14?

Threadjack!

[edit] also, I typed mystic instead of mystik in for fun, and found this:

He started in august, I started in april. Coincidence!? It'd be more fun if it wasn't ;)

Art / Artsy stuff at 2 AM Pacific Standard Time
January 06, 2007, 10:37:44 AM
Alright, the last time I posted in the art section of the forums was way back when the old forum was the only forum. I figure I'm due for another round.

So the past three nights I've stayed up late enough to send my dad off to work (he leaves at 4:30 AM) working on an updated layout for my website. I want to lengthen the ranting space and add a place where the newsbox and other things (those much talked about Project Wonderful ads mayhaps?) can have their own place without being squished into a tiny blurb. But this isn't about the layout, or else it'd be in the web design section.

So, first a little back story.

As none of you know, all of my previous layouts have been heavily art based, some to the point of making the site completely unusable. But it is an art site, after all. More recently it's also become the home of a specific pirate by the name of "Pirate B" who's become a sort of unoffical mascot, and who tagged along with the compass logo that I've used ever since she first showed up. What started as just another character for another layout became an entire other story in my head, where the pirate had a crew of quirky characters, and each character had a story, and they all sailed around in the good ol' ship called Mystik Skies. Eventually one of the crew members managed to show up alongside Pirate B in the latest MS layout, a glimpse at exactly how odd the rest of her crew is. The newest layout that I'm cooking up gives you more than just a glimpse, but has a nice little pin up of the whole crew (well, all the ones that matter anyway).

And so after all that, here's the art piece in question: the work in progress picture of the new layout. (it's fairly big, so 800x600ers, if you still exist, beware!) Note that I haven't finished her bandages, or her pants, or her sword, or even started on the other characters, though you can see the quick doodly-things of them in the back.

comparing it to the original pictures of Pirate B, and even the latest incarnation on the website, I really feel that I've improved at least a little bit art-wise. Sure her right arm is essentially a lump, and her left arm has some pretty wonky proportions, but at least I've gotten a little better at coloring.....right? I even used a different shading style than I usually do. 80% of the time I pick a dark color, paint it over everything on a new layer in photoshop, and mess with the opacities. This time I actually picked out the colors (as you can see by the crazy swatch collection I have). I even added detail to her eyepatch, which puts me somewhere between a perfectionist and completely anal... Also, no more anime halo-hair! Holy forks!

anyway, mostly I'm bored and a little stuck (I need to finish coloring her, but at the same time I want to start drawing the other characters, but at the same time I don't want to screw them up over and over and over....) so I'm just posting this to waste time and possibly get some feedback. I won't guarentee I'll listen to anything you say, but knowing it for the future would be nice :)

Also, quick tidbit: the sword she has is actually strongly based on a pair of cutlasses I bought on eBay a while back. Fun.

Also also, sorry if my rantings are a bit unreadable tonight. Lately I've been waking up early for a job, but now that that's over I'm slowly becoming a night owl again....and the transition isn't exactly smooth.

General Chat / Brain Sex
January 04, 2007, 08:46:03 AM
Aw, Xeph thinks we're all smart. ;)

I scored dismally low on the empathy part of the BBC quiz, but I got 11 out of 12 on the 3D shapes, totalling in on a 50 in the male area of the scale. Apparently I could never be a girly girl. XD

The gender genie managed to guess my gender, at least...

To be honest, though, I hate it when anything is categorized using male vs. female. It is more likely than no extremely biased and based on little more than common stereotypes of whatever culture made it up. Women are emotional and unpredictable, men are logical and completely lost when it comes to emotion. Me personally I'm a cynical, logically-inclined little thing, and people (specifically other women) are always so shocked when I don't "understand what they're going through" or would rather talk about the technical aspects and entertainment value of the latest video games than what fashions are in and who's dating who. Then when I ask why they're so interested in that stuff, 90% of the time they answer something similar to "well, that's what girls DO, duh. Go be contrary to our standards somewhere else, mmmmmkay?" :P except not in so many words, and usually with a couple of "like"s thrown in.

Sadly I'm not "manly" enough to hang out with the boys, either. Too emotional for the guys, not emotional enough for the girls. Alas! I am genderless, so it seems. :P

Then again, I hate stereotypes in general. That's a whole 'nother rant, but seriously. HATE.

Love IQ quizzes though. :)
