General Chat / Re: Google Phone!
March 26, 2009, 12:35:34 AM
I've never got one, but to be honest the only appeal it'd have to me is if it could do SSH due to all the web work I do. Otherwise I'd lean more towards the iPhone than the Google Phone.

General Chat / Re: Happy? Tell us why!

I'm even more happy now because I got into the school that I applied to, so I'll finally get to work towards my BA in game design and maybe live my dream of being a game designer! That and living in Seattle / Redmond will be kinda an interesting change of scenery from where I am now. :)

I no longer use Ubuntu, so it's hard to say. This is a question better posted on the Ubuntu forums, not the Xepher forums. :P

Alternatively, you could also have someone help you set your forum up, so long as you don't mind giving out your username and password for it. DO NOT GIVE THAT OUT ON THE FORUM!!!!.

If you're unsure on how to set up a forum yourself, then maybe you should opt for a sub-forum on this one for your site.

However, in any compression method, make sure that you actually test the archive. Especially with multi-part archives, because if a single portion becomes corrupted you lose it all.

Hosting Q&A / Re: what is PHP exactly
March 09, 2009, 01:33:22 PM
Well, the other main difference is you generally use HTML and PHP together, not separately (well I suppose you could if you're serving up pages in something silly like plain text, xml, or something else). So you'd need to learn both in that case.

If you're just starting out with this stuff, I suggest just sticking to HTML and getting an understanding on what it is. Think of PHP as an extension to make it do more than it's initially able to.

HTML is a markup language designed for data layout and display (Hyper Text Markup Language). HTML is static information which doesn't change without the aid of something else (Javascript on the front-end and/or PHP, Ruby, ASP, etc... on the server-side).

PHP (as well as Ruby, ASP, and a few other things) is a server-side interpreted programming language which is typically used for generating HTML or other content dynamically.

That's about as well as I can explain it as I'm not really a teacher.

Technical Support / Re: Tracking down a malware issue

Right, and rather than take responsibility for doing something dumb, they'll blame the website that supposedly infected their computer all by itself.

People really are stupid...

I'm happy because as one of the original founders of my old high school's computer club I get to go back there as alumni and teach kids how to write basic games. I'd be more happy if the teacher who's running the club would have informed me that school was out this week too. :P

If people would get the hell off of ancient browsers and operating systems (like Win98 and IE6), issues like this would come to a damn near dead halt (as well as 90% of the spam and botnets on the net would stop).

Aside from OS and browser security issues from being out of date, nothing and I mean NOTHING can just install itself to your computer. Usually this is caused by some stupid user doing something, well, stupid. Generally stuff like when someone who doesn't really understand what they're doing just decides that because some random popup says, "Your computer is infected, click here and download X to clean it!" that it's a good idea to follow what it says and download said *spyware* to stop that pesky spyware or virus that's on their computer.

Then when it's all said and done, people get frustrated and decide that the only way to fix it is to reformat their computer... which is also equally as stupid now days. The fix I generally find that works better than reformatting is, "Install a new OS or get a new computer".

HAHA, zombie threads FTW.

Honestly, after seeing the source code for WP, it's kinda poorly written software. Then again that's generally what you get with OSS.

But aside that, if you have issues with something PHP oriented, feel free to IM me on AIM/YahooIM. Just make sure to state who you are on the Xepher forums so I know who it is I'm talking to. I can help most cases as I'm a very experienced programmer. Just keep in mind that at times I may not respond because I'm not actually at a computer. ;)

Web Design / Re: Forms

there's a lot of interesting stuff you can do to help prevent spam, the picture idea one was a simple one that will filter out pretty much every spam bot. Others are things like math questions, or that stupid little mixed image entry thing (which is easy to get around now).
