Technical Support / Re: Patreon E-Mail Bouncing
Last post by Xepher - November 05, 2019, 09:01:54 PM
So, with that whole email kurfuffle with hotmail (and trying to get onto their "nice" list), there was about a 12 hour window (basically while I was asleep) where the email server here was misconfigured with a bad address list, and so it bounced some messages during that time. The logs show only one message from pateron.com bouncing (and it was to you) on the 22nd of October. There were successful deliveries from them on the 17th and earlier though, so it looks like it bounced only once, but it was a hard rejection (saying your address was unknown due to the misconfiguration.) If there were other bounces, they would've had to come from other servers that didn't use patreon.com anywhere in the "from" field.

tl;dr They weren't blocked, there was just a glitch that was fixed the same day it happened. It should be all good now.

Technical Support / Patreon E-Mail Bouncing
Last post by kschnee - November 05, 2019, 01:04:34 PM
Sometime in the last month, it looks like Patreon.com has started being unusable from Xepher.net. I asked them why I wasn't getting login confirmation messages and they said...

QuoteI checked our records, and I'm seeing that our emails have been hard-bouncing from your email server. A hard-bounce indicates one of a few things: recipient email address does not exist, domain name does not exist, recipient email server has completely blocked delivery...

Because our emails were continually rejected, your email was placed on our do not send list. I've since removed your email address from that list.

If you continue to have this issue, I recommend reaching out to your email service provider directly, so that they can add the following IP addresses to your whitelist:

159.135.225.154
159.135.225.155
159.135.225.156
69.72.32.187
166.78.71.13
166.78.71.14
Could you please add these?

Doh! It's always something. I had to set up a new aliases to allow microsoft to forward email feedback/rejections to me (to help stay off their naughty list) and apparently since the last time I set up an alias, they changed the format of the alias file, so I started a new one. I somehow didn't realize that I had the setting enabled so that ONLY aliased accounts get delivery. E.g. I have to do "kschnee: kschnee" or email doesn't go through, instead of only keeping redirection in there. So yeah, all the vanity domains and stuff worked, but not main accounts. I didn't get any email on my xepher account for the past 24 hours either, but the ones aliased to my real name kept coming through (it forwards to the same account) so I didn't realize anything was wrong.

Anyway, it SHOULD be fixed now. Sorry for the trouble, and please let me know if you have further problems.

Thanks! However, Phil and another friend are reporting that they can't send mail *to* me as of the last day or so. Any ideas?

Sorry, we were unable to deliver your message to the following address.
<kschnee@xepher.net>:
550: 5.1.1 <kschnee@xepher.net>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown in local recipient table

Okay, jumped all the hoops again, and re-re-registered for their feedback system yet again (which is supposed to warn me if complaints are raised.) In theory mail SHOULD start going back through to MS addresses now, though they said it could take several hours for changes to take effect.

Yeah, it's frustrating me too. It's not this server specifically, it's the whole subnet at my upstream host. I'm trying to get something done about it, but I've fought this like 10 times, and every time it gets fixed, the subnet ends up getting blocked again at some point.

I'm currently getting a message like this whenever I mail someone who uses a Hotmail account:
Quotehost hotmail-com.olc.protection.outlook.com[104.47.5.33] said: 550 5.7.1
Unfortunately, messages from [198.74.48.54] weren't sent. Please contact
your Internet service provider since part of their network is on our block
list (S3140). You can also refer your provider to
    http://mail.live.com/mail/troubleshooting.aspx#errors.

I guess we're on some spam blacklist?

My sincere apologies, the forums are supposed to email me when there's a reply to one of my comments, but I guess that broke. You're in, and I'll send you an email shortly with details.

I'm sorry I didn't see this until now. I'm pretty easy going about applications these days, but before I set up an account, I want to make sure you realize the services here are pretty low level. You get SSH/SFTP access and have to install things like wordpress or other web frameworks yourself. There's nothing point-n-click. Are you comfortable doing that?

Yes I am aware that I will have to do most of the Website creation myself but I really only see that as a learning experience so I am fine with doing an extra bit of work.
