I'd like to host a variety of content including my art gallery (digital artwork, fanart and original) and possibly my portfolio. I also paintchat a lot and would really like to be able to host my own rather than forever having to rely on finding semi-empty public rooms on the web. Although I earned my BS in biology, I'm earning a second BA in games, web, and interactive media. Drawing has always been one of my fondest hobbies and I've gone through quite a few different webhosts trying to find one that is capable of all the scripting support I need as well as not breaking my bank account.

I currently have several websites and they can be viewed at the following links. All content was designed, drawn, and developed by myself unless otherwise noted (a few paintchat collaborations here and there with Nuu, a current account-holder and the friend who referred me to xepher.net):

kidavi.net - Current (temporary) web development portfolio website

Comprehensive gallery of digital art
Fan gallery for Shin Megami Tensei game series
Fanlisting

What I'd really like to do is make a nice portal site to tie everything together: I want it to host my best / most accomplished artwork, future projects / applications, and my official portfolio (webdesign & development as well as art/commission). I want to bring my oekaki board over and also host a paintchat (for which I need a Linux server with SSH). In addition, I have some printed projects (artbooks, doujinshi) lined up that I would like to advertise and hopefully sell from the portal.

I think it's really awesome what you're doing here, this is a fantastic endeavor. Thanks very much for taking the time to read this!

So, basically, the kidavi.net site and subdomains would be moved to xepher?  Or this a complete new portal?  Sorry for asking what might be the obvious.  Anyway, nice art and design and I hope you get in. :)

I actually own four domain names and would be moving a different one to xepher. "kidavi" is a derivative of my real name, but I'm going to be married in a couple of months and my name will change-- so I'm planning to put the portal site under a different domain.

It will be a completely new portal, but it will serve to replace the site that is currently kidavi.net. After the new portal is up, I plan to take the other one down.

Thank you! :)

griever

Congratulations!  I know how that is, except I'm opting to keep my domain. :)  When's the date?

Thank you!

And same to you, it sounds like? :D

May 16th-- so soon, so much left to do!

griever

Yup, May 30th.  And I know the feeling...there's so much to do now.  I can't wait for it to all be over.

Anyway, I'll stop hijacking this thread.  Hopefully, Xepher will get to this application soon. :)

Just popping in to say that I've built the portal site, which will be this:

However, this is temporary. I plan to register a new domain name for the portfolio site. At the moment I'm hosted with 1and1 and I have to say I'm less than happy with them and am looking to cancel my contract. At first I thought I'd stick with them on the side to keep some of my adult artwork (since it's not welcome on xepher, I of course would not host it here), but now I've decided to jump ship with 1and1 altogether.

If my application is approved here, I will probably just dump the adult stuff off in LiveJournal and bring my other sites to xepher.

I'm horrible about getting to these in a timely manner lately. As such, the first question has to be "are you still interested?" Your artwork and webdesign are a shoe-in, however... you initially mentioned that you just wanted a portal site to tie it all together. I generally try to avoid those, as by the point somewhere is just needing that, then their content is already out there. This place is designed to help people who otherwise wouldn't be sharing their art be able to do so. Later though, you said you'd probably bring your other sites here as well. If that's the plan, then I'll likely say yes.

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, I'd like to have my portfolio / illustration gallery, my game fanart site, a paintchat, and possibly an art and design blog (I have yet to create this) hosted here. I've basically done away with the portal idea altogether. I also want to put up a photo gallery, is this acceptable if it's snapshots and amateur photography? (I'm not very good yet, still learning how to use my DSLR!)

Do you accept domain name transfers? At the moment the domain I want to use is still being hosted by 1and1 even though I canceled my hosting contract, and I want to get away from everything having to do with them. :(

(Or do domain names need to be hosted on a different registrar and pointed to Xepher's nameservers?)

Okay, you're in! You should have an email with instructions.

UPDATE: The mail I sent just bounced. The mailserver at kidavi.net just told me "no such user." Please provide a new email address.

FYI, you don't have to host everything here or anything, you're free to have sites elsewhere... I just don't do "portal" sites, and you're expected to have something that's "creative content" actually here. As for photography... of course you can host that here. Photography is creative and artistic just as much as drawing or writing. And in a more general since, as long as the main focus of your site is the artistic/creative content you were accepted for, you can use your site for other, personal things as well. (E.g. some people have some school projects, others keep a family photo gallery, etc.) The general rule is just not to abuse the service. You can't have a 3 page comic up that you never work on anymore, yet use 50GB of space backing up your personal files. :-)

For the domain name. Xepher.net is not a registrar, so I don't actually sell domain names (or accept transfers.) What I do provide is the hosting, including DNS. So at whatever registrar you have, you simply have to set the authoritative nameserver for your domain to here, (and let me know) and I'll link it with your account here. More information is in the "Virtual Domains" section of the help page http://xepher.net/help.php (which is also linked in the mail I sent.)

Thank you!

Oh, whoops I'm sorry-- when I canceled my last hosting I also transferred the domain and I forgot to set up that email again. Please send to: contact(at)kim-maida.com instead.

I completely understand! I don't even want a portal site anymore anyway, so that's out of the picture. :) I'm going to set up my portfolio and probably at least two galleries.

Okay, understood! I'll set up the nameservers.

Thank you so much. :)
