Title: Art challenge
Post by: phantasus on June 30, 2007, 08:58:39 PM
Hello everyone!
I would like to propouse an art challenge in the forums.
Lemme explain, its like a game:
So someone chooses a topic ( it can either be the first one to post or we can choose someone to do so, it can be the same person or we can change it , whatever you prefer.) and everyone who is interested in participating draws something about that topic in 15 minutes or less ( this is honor based ) then post it here.
At the end we would have a collection of drawings of the same topic by different artists we can look at them and see how other people see that single topic.
Topic changes once a week.

Time you spend scanning or so does not count, just the time you are actually working on the image. Tecnic is free, it can be color or b/w or how ever you want.
The point of this is to practice quick drawing or painting.

So...is anyone interested?   :)

interested, but I can;t commit to anything. I suggest to wait to actually do this AFTER the server move. Might be a good promotional thing or... something?

Shouldn't be a big deal. Move isn't for another couple weeks minimum, and shouldn't bring things down for more than half a day maximum. This looks like it would be an ongoing contest/game too. I can't draw worth jack, or I'd jump in... heck, I may toss in some horrible tries anyway.

That could be cool.

While the prospect of a 'group art' thread sounds good, I don't like the idea of only having 15 minutes to spend. It's barely enough for a sketch; it doesn't push people to work harder on their art. Something like a speed-painting thread (example (http://forums.megatokyo.com/index.php?showtopic=1724274)) would be good, give people 2-3 hours to paint something so there's plenty of time to call a piece 'finished', and still add finishing touches.

well i thougth of 15 min so this wont feel like it would take off a lot of time and, yes, whit the idea of speed painting.
but i dont have any problem whit changing it for 2-3 hrs or even eliminating the time limit.
the thing is you post somethin , at leas a sketch , about the week's topic before the week is over.

lets just make clear the rules ( i dunno, voting or so) before we start.

(Tsunemori, thanks for giving us the first weeks topic :)  )

This sounds like a neat idea ^^ I definitely won't be contributing any masterpieces, but I'd like to participate anyway (I already have something in mind for the pancake theme, haha). As for the time limit, maybe we could mimic the thread Tsunemori linked - let each participant decide on a personal time limit less than or equal to 2 hours.

Yeah, I apologize. I may try an actual "drawing" later... I just couldn't think of anything clever that I could do lefthanded with a mouse. I should hook up my tablet tomorrow or something.

EDIT: Oh yeah, time it took. Umm... about 37 seconds drawing pancakes and plate. 5 minutes arranging the stacks and copying them. 15 minutes looking around the web for other words for "pancake." 25 minutes trying to decide the punchline image. ("Jesus H. Christ on a Pogostick"  "Sharks with Laserbeams" and "Squirrels with Lightsabers" were the runners up.) 5 more minutes getting it into a reasonable file for display.

No silly pancake stack!  Pancake tower!

Took about 40 min plus an unknown time fighting with my scanner.

Fun! I need an excuse to get back into practice.
Now was I always this terrible, or is this just decaying skills from a few months away from my pencils...

(about 45 minutes)

Dalila vs Pancake, 14 minutes:

Based on a dream my brother had in which he ate a pancake with a face. He says the eye squirted when he bit into it xD Gwyn's version is better x3

Sure, why not...

How about "The world of tomorrow?" That is, a scene from life (expected, realistic, hoped for, feared, etc...) like 20-40 years from now.

The future: giving new meaning to the "blue screen of death."

If you're wondering why her suit isn't shaded, well.....the prospects of "horror movie marathon" were promising. Err, I mean, it's a style choice representing the, uh, emptiness of the future. Or something.

I tried a new style of drawing where I don't actually draw, I just slap on the base colors then draw on those. Sort of like Samurai Jack in a way (god I miss that show).

time:
10 seconds for idea
5 minutes to sketch
47 minutes painting
7 minutes uploading and blabbing.
total: 59.1 minutes.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a date with a monster movie.

EIDT: oh yeah, also......BOO! I'M BACK!

took me like 15 min, the idea came from when i resived an ipod nano as b-day present. i was showing it to one of my closest friends and he told me he was saving money to buy his when they came whit camara, celphone, voice recorder, etc. and we started taking about the ipod of tomorrow, even smaller and whit a lot of feathures, and also about all those useless gadgets that makes us useless.
someday we wont know how to do anything, gadgets and electric things will do everything for us.

by the way,
dragyn : i find your poster pretty funny and creative, i would have never imagined it. XD

tickyhead: i luv your image, it is pretty cool. specialy your color choise. do looks futuristic.

As you can see, I don't think we'll have much tech-wise to worry about in 20-30 years.  ::)

You can't really tell due to the numerous filters I used, but that rubble in that picture is actually earth.  :D

I for one welcome our cybear overlords. A little less than an hour I guess, I really lose track of time when I'm doing this. If I colored it I would have been at it forever!

In the future...
No longer will we have to settle for just one Bach piece to played at a time.
No longer will organs be the only instrument with nifty controls.
No longer will the neighbor with the barking dog be the most hated person on the block.

The Harpsicarillorgan with bells, pipes, strings and 100% more strait lines that I can draw.

(Plush fox on the music stand comes standard of course)

ok, so, its been a week, or 2 acutaly. so i guess it is time to change topic.

since things still seem to be a little bit slow due to the last harry potter book. and im seeing harry potter related stuff almoust everywhere, why dont we make it the weeks topic?

just one thing, please, if your drawing contains spoilers to the last book, place a warning and , insted of the image, a link to it. just in case someone who have not finished the book is watching.   ;)

My model waited just until I drew in the front paws and committed myself to the pose before walking around and eventually laying down.  Should have made more spirally things to hide my guesstimation.

I think that, as you yourself noted, everyone's back in school. This happens just about this time every year... forums go practically dead for a month or so. Just put it on hold for now, and poke the thread in a couple weeks and see if people respond then.

Well... I could try, something... :)
But I probably won't have any more luck than you. People don't really participate in this stuff, when I do it. :P
Also, school is here, and all... but, just for the fun of it, and because I haven't done a lot as far as posts are concerned:

A dream that you've had.
Or, if you don't recall any dreams of your own, a dream that someone you know had, that will let you share and that hasn't already been shown.
I dunno'... just some random thing. ;D
