Knowhow Trading Post / Java references?
September 09, 2005, 04:11:57 AM
Funny, I'm in a Game Programming class right now, and the instructor wants us to write our games in Java. I don't, however, know Java in the least. As for all those that say "It's a lot like C++" they obviously don't know C++, because from what I've seen, the structure of Java alone is far different than and C/C++ code I've ever seen in my life.

About the only similarities that I see lie in classes, and even those are structured differently. Give me C++ and a good game development library over Java any day. Or if you're looking for speedy development, go with Python.

My wish? Let Java die, the internet would be a better place without it.

Sorry, I know it's not a lot of help, but if I knew of any good sites, I'd let you know.

Awesome, now we won't lose a lot of the good threads that were in the old forums. Considering there is no way you could transfer the data in a full and reliable manner (without bringing junk over with it) it's nice to continue to have that archive. However, if you want, you could change all the forums under PhpBB to read only.

It really isn't all that strange to me... lol

Maybe it's because most people are shorter than me, so I never really look at other's as being really tall or short... they're all short to me. :P

Speaking of classes... looks like I actually got into all the stuff I needed this term. That's it, it's over, no more WCC after this. FINALLY!

lol.... I'm 6'4" so I don't usually have an issue with being shorter than me... but when I see taller people by about a foot, it's still a little scary.

Knowhow Trading Post / html question

You'd probably need to utalize javascript to accomplish this. As I don't believe there is a stretch option in either HTML, XHTML, or CSS. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure there isn't.

Thus, it's usually a good idea anyways to pick a background that can be repeated on an axis or tiled. I have a background that fades into the color black. It always fits the window simply because it repeats in the vertical direction (y). (my site - warning this is not W3 compliant... This code was written back before I was a bit more strict on that.)

Hell I've had the thought cross my mind to get one of those motor cycles... they may be small, but they get great gas distance per gallon.

Joking... joking... yeesh. I know it's far beyond out technological capabilities to even fathom actually creating something like that at this time.

I'd need to agree with Xepher. While I was in Alaska, far be it only 3 days, I had to take a bus everywhere I went. Now in Juneau, AK the public transit system is pretty well organized, and since the place isn't huge the bus route pamplet isn't but 2 pages including times. But still....

It was a major pain in the ass. After the very first day, only going to 3-4 places that I could have hit in 30 mins by myself in my own vehicle, I spent the entire day travelling to the places I needed to go. The problem is, just because bus transit was (most the time) on schedule, doesn't mean that the various companies, shcools, organizations, etc... follow the schedule. And god forbid if you try to leave a store, and get caught up in a line, then end up missing your bus by like 3 mins just because some person can't decide if they want something. Public transit is not nearly as efficiant as personnal transit for time. Not even close.

So yes, I'd agree with Xepher 100%. Give me millions of cars that run clean any day over public transit. But I think it would be cool to have teleportation technology even more. :)

Or the government could simply start to premote GM's new vehicle technology. They have the tech and have built a car that runs off water. Think about it, what do you get when you break down the water molecules? Hydrogen and Oxygen right? Both are combustable gasses. Ingenious! Also expensive to pull of in an on demand situation like a in a car. From what I hear, they claim that what comes out of the tail pipe is simply water vapor. That should make those enviornmentalists happy.
