Technical Support / file permissions
June 09, 2006, 04:00:42 AM
I got lazy and I've started using Website Baker to make my website.  After every time I change something I go and use the fix file permissions tool and everything was working fine.  Except it stopped working.  Now I have one page that still gives the "internal server error" even after using the fix file permissions tool.  I even tried manually setting the file permissions using my FTP client.

Any ideas?

I wish you had the art page done... but I just like sites with comics and other art too.  Surely you must get bored of your comic and draw other things sometimes?  I know I do... I am not very persistent though, I've gotten past about 8 pages on the same comic once, and I've started six.  So... I guess I'm kind of skeptical of just comic and nothing else.  I don't know how much space that host gives you because I've never heard of it or anything, but maybe wait until you can get some of those other pages up also, and you really really know you're gonna stick with your comic.

Sorry that's pretty much the same as what everyone else said.  I know there are a lot of dedicated comic artists out there, but I'm sure there's many more that aren't.  Myself included.

And speaking of other art, if you had a bunch, you could just apply for a gallery sort of site. Then you could do your comic on the side, but not apply solely based on the comic.  A little more leeway with that, but just an idea.

Announcements / Status, Plans, and Questions...
February 12, 2006, 03:11:10 AM
1.  Obviously if you don't have the time or resources to rebuild right now you shouldn't.  I don't mind a little downtime if it means you have some leeway for happiness!

2.  I think I am only using these features right now:
-Webserver
-FTP
-MySQL
-PHP
If I'm using anything else I don't know about it!
What is the statistics thing?  I don't see my username on there so now I'm curious how I get that...

3.   I am not familiar with SCP, but if I can use my FTP client to do it that would be fine by me.  Or really just as long as someone can recommend something to use and it doesn't confuse me!  I don't mind using web-interfaces too much as long as they aren't missing anything important.

4.  Other than the statistics that I didn't know existed until now, I can't think of anything...

5.  I don't know enough about this sort of thing to even notice.  ^__^

6.  I'm not really sure how to generate revenue.  Other than what you mentioned where users could pay to remove the newsbox.  I'm not really sure how big a demand there would be for that though, it's not the most restrictive thing in the world...

7.  I wish I had as much time to read the applications as I used to...  :(  I don't think you should try to force it though, because if people really don't have an interest in it they probably won't take it seriously.  It might speed things up if there were some kind of form or something, because a lot of people seem to read the rules, then still miss some things, then people who are reading the applications say, you need this and this and this, which leads to the person correcting it and continuing the application process, when they could just have all this done to begin with?  So people could spend more time considering a completed application than just quoting the rules of the process.

Web Design / Critique

Ok, thanks Databits.

The next layout will probably have a completely different color scheme... or at least kind of different.  I think the white space would vary based on your resolution.  I use 1024x768 and there is just a little bit, and I can see how there would be a lot more if you were using anything bigger than that, but I try to think about people with smaller resolutions... I know a lot of people who still use 800x600 (x.x) and I try to design for it to still be functional for them.

I also thought that was purple? *boggle*

I'm wanting to redo my site layout, because I'm slowly starting to dislike it already...

But really I was wondering if some of you would look at it as it is now and let me know what you think of the functionality, layout, etc., so the next one can be as nice as possible.  I know you all have a lot of good ideas when it comes to sites, so if you would just take a moment of your time I would be quite grateful.

I don't remember your last application, but I don't consider a forum to be creative content.
You might need to explain better if that's not really all you intend to do.

My first line is the xml mabob:

I don't see anything wrong with that?

But I just deleted that whole line and it works now. *shrug*

I made a new layout for my site and I uploaded it, but when I fixed the permissions for my index.php file with my FTP client, it didn't seem to have any effect (same server 500 error or whatnot).  So I used the fix file permissions tool, and now it displays this:

Parse error: parse error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/robynie/public_html/index.php on line 1

I don't know what that means!  :(  I tried reuploading and fixing the permissions both ways again, to the same result.

Please help!
