Thanks for the linkies, I've been reading php tutes for a while now ;p

I was thinking about having some kind of thing where I could automate downloading music on my page, since as of now it's all hardcoded. I guess I'm hoping that it might look better or something *sigh*. I suck at web design.

btw, I actually got a donation =O 19.12 ...O.o weird number.

Knowhow Trading Post / PHP newb...
June 24, 2006, 12:11:27 AM
Hey, I'm a real newb with php, and I don't know many functions yet... What I'd like to ask is...

Is there a function I can call to fill an array with the names of the files in a given directory?

I know I can do things like (index.php?filename="blah.txt"), and if I had an array, I could probably foreach it to match if the file exists...

How would I start a download if there was a match in that case..? Is this a bad (not secure) way to go about things?

Thanks for anyone who tries to help...

p.s. i have lots of experience with procedural programming, so i'm not a total dummy... eheh

Are you perhaps making internal changes to the e-mail accounts? When I try to login to mine I get this error:

QuoteERROR:
Bad request: Missing or invalid argument to LOGIN

Read data:
only me? :/

Wow. I never figured out why spammers send e-mails with a bunch of completely totally random words. Now I know it's probably to bypass things like this. Nice choice of words though, and a good initiative ^^

This isn't the first I've seen about mail.ru. I wonder why it's going unchecked like that for so long.. =/

I usually dont suggest things much in this forum, because I'm one of the people who is really inexperienced with web programming in general. I only recently started learning php (what an easy language as far as type and arrays go, geez), but I have to say that in the web v. web2.0 thing that seems to be going around lately, I have to agree with you about your seeming agreeance with the phenomenon.

Programmers have been dealing with these concepts for ages. Keep seperate parts seperate. Your graphics blitter doesnt have to know a damn thing about the routines that access a hard drive, or routines that calculate if an enemy is touching another one.
These concepts are segregated.. coherent if you will. and it's the same way with this stuff, someone shouldnt have to know web programming in the least bit to be able to share their art.

Sharing art is the problem we have to solve, in its abstract form. What is sharing art? Well theres a lot of code that has to be laid down before anything else.

i dont know what a CMS actually physically entails but if its nice and intuitive to use i'd say its a good idea, and should promote better artists to contribute

because they can do what they do: art. not web programming.

General Chat / Spore = Best Game Ever?
May 07, 2006, 05:49:19 AM
yeah i heard about this game ages ago. it's completely mind boggling. you can specify EVERYTHING even like how many legs, appearance of your creatures. and they will learn and grow based on thier own shape/adeptness at handling certain tools, etc

as a game designer it makes me cry a little bit, lol :P

really too bad.. one day i'll get linux and compile it natively into .elf or whatever it is ;p

anyways yeah, about the question of fb using opengl the answer is yes. see the thing is, fb doesnt have oop at the moment though. so opengl is wrapped, works like the c equivalent would i guess. cept you can throw stuff together faster, because its BASIC ;p

since there isn't oop, i think that its a royal pain in the ass to hack an interface with directx. when fb moves to full gcc compatibility, the possibilities will be endless (for anything that compiles with gcc)
