I’m looking to register a domain name for my website here.

What I would prefer would be a ‘.net’ but I could live with a ‘.com’ should it be signifigantly cheaper. This is my first time doing this so I wondered if any of you had more experience with this sort of thing and could help me.

How good is GoDaddy..? Their prices are attractive however I’m worried about the ‘up-time’ vs ‘down-time’ (they’ll always tweak their own figures to look better) of getting someone who enters “example.net

One of my friends used godaddy and has no complaints. most of them use dreamhost though.

I've had no problem with Yahoo! Domains.

http://domains.yahoo.com

Occassionally they have deals, but the base price is $10 per year. You can have the name redirect to whatever page you want, and as an option you can have it mask where it redirects you (which would have the domain name in the URL no matter where you go on your page).

Uptime? Downtime? No idea what Godaddy is talking about with that. Like I said, I never have any problems with their redirect system.

I just buy "raw" domain names. I don't pay for any redirect services or anything, as I run DNS here. If you go that route, you just have to tell me what the domain name was, and I link it to your account here. I've used http://www.domainsnext.com/ for years now. I wouldn't say they're great or anything, but their terms are such that you actually own the name, whereas places like GoDaddy have a history of ripping people off. I don't know if they still do it, but for a while, if you read the fine print, you didn't own the name, they bought it at your request, and then leased it to you, making it impossible to ever move to another provider.

As for what you need to do... let me know of course, and other than that, set the authoritative nameservers for your domain to ns1.xepher.net and ns2.xepher.net and that should do it.

fesworks

when you do that, does the website do this:

http://fesworks.xepher.net/home.php

to

http://fesandernst.com/home.php   ... and all other pages, etc?

Also, I have not read the Yahoo terms, so I can't say anything about terms like that like GoDaddy.

Almost, but not quite. Your example redirects to the "proper" url (the xepher.net subdomain.) If I directly host the name, there's no redirect needed,
the domain name is added to the virtual server alias list, just the same as the (sub)domain you already have. See http://www.missmab.com/ vs. http://missmab.xepher.net/ Same page on both, and if you use the .com, it doesn't redirect, so your users can always see the same URL. Make sense? (Sometimes I'm bad at explaining this.)

fesworks

Well, Yahoo has a "Mask URL" option, but what it does it would just show "http://fesandernst.com" no matter what part of the site you are on... If I where to click away from where it redirects me when I type in "http://fesandernst.com" and then click to go to the "HOME"  it would only show "http://fesandernst.com" and not "http://fesandernst.com/home.php" (I don't like the Masked option).

I'm guessing, that if I got it transfered here, that it does not mask like that... Like http://www.missmab.com/Comics/Vol_737.php is the same as http://missmab.xepher.net/Comics/Vol_737.php

If so. I should do that.

So I just "set the authoritative nameservers for your domain to ns1.xepher.net and ns2.xepher.net and that should do it." after letting you know I wanna do that?

Right, I have to add the proper data to the web, mail, and DNS servers. As a bonus, you can use anythingATfesandernst.com for email and it will go into mail system here just like your regular addresses here. That is to say, it goes into your box here, or gets forwarded, or spam filtered, or whatever you've got your account setup to do with your email here.

fesworks

I'll do that this weekend to avoid any URL disruption. If there really won't be, then say the word and I'll change the nameservers as soon as I see your post saying I can!

There's no delay at this end. I set it up already, so it's good to go. Any delay would come from their side, but I imagine they wouldn't stop the redirect, and then wait before changing the name servers. As soon as queries show xepher.net as authoritative, it'll work here.

fesworks

Done. Forgot about my index page there... I have to copy my Home.php to my index untill I can rework all my pages again :P

Hi Xepher!

I just registed at http://www.domainsnext.com/ for 'http://munestudios.net'  ...where do I go from now..? I would like it pointed at http://munerift.xepher.net/MuneStudios please. (if you can)
I also forwarded the DNS to ns1.xepher.net & ns2.xepher.net like you said to do.

You mean you set the nameservers to those? It shouldn't be "forwarding" anything. Assuming that's true, it should start working as soon as the nameserver changes take effect where you are. It's working already here, so it's just a matter of how long before your (or a visitor's) ISP updates their nameservers. Usually it's 24-48 hours from the time you make the changes.

fesworks

Hey Xepher, I'm going to request this same treatment for "www.ardracomic.com" for "ardra.xepher.net" as well... but I'm not going to switch it over until next week Monday, since I still want that Domain to point to the old site until then.

I'll probably repost on Monday about it. Thanks in advance though :)
